Justin Trudeau announced his resignation as Prime Minister of Canada, citing internal party conflicts and his declining popularity. In his statement, he emphasized that stepping down was necessary to focus on resolving these internal issues and ensure that the Liberal Party could properly prepare for the upcoming election.

Trudeau confirmed that he would remain in office until a new leader is selected, with Parliament being prorogued until March 24. The calls for his resignation within the Liberal Party had been growing, especially after the unexpected departure of Chrystia Freeland, which added to the ongoing political challenges.

As federal elections approach, these pressures have intensified, leading to his decision to step down.

Trudeau’s leadership saw both significant achievements and controversies, which contributed to his declining approval ratings. His key accomplishments included the Canada Child Benefit, the legalization of recreational cannabis, and promoting gender equality by ensuring 50% representation of women in his cabinet.

However, his tenure was marred by scandals, such as accusations of corruption and the emergence of photos showing him in brownface. His handling of the pandemic, particularly vaccine mandates, sparked backlash, contributing to the Freedom Convoy protests in early 2022.

Additionally, economic pressures, including rising housing and food prices, strained public services and immigration systems, further fueling dissatisfaction. These combined factors led to a steady decline in his approval ratings.

Trudeau’s resignation signals a new chapter for the Liberal Party, which now faces strong opposition and internal uncertainty. The party has governed as a minority since 2019, depending on support from allies like the New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois. However, that support recently collapsed, leaving the Liberals struggling to hold power after Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland’s sudden resignation.

Trudeau’s personal unpopularity with Canadians has also become a growing burden on the party, making it harder for them to perform well in the next election. Meanwhile, the Conservatives have maintained a strong polling lead, and opposition leaders are calling for an early election after the Liberals choose their new leader.

The Liberal Party has announced a nationwide leadership contest to find Trudeau’s successor. Nevertheless, after years of political setbacks, scandals, and declining approval, regaining public trust will be a significant challenge before the next election.
